Finals, A Survival Guide: The All Nighter

Since it is that time again.. at least for me it is. As a student myself, I don’t suggest all nighters to anyone. Yes I have done it… a lot. But I never feel better after having engaged in an all nighter. I’m always a little slower for the remainder of the week (especially if I have to do multiple), and it’s hard to make up for this loss of sleep when you have a demanding college schedule that deprives sleep to begin with! The obvious advice I give is to plan your life out so you don’t have to attempt an all nighter (but we all know that isn’t always possible) so I’m here to give you some tips on pulling an all nighter!

empty-314554_1280

1. Spread out the all nighters

Image via Giphy

If you have to do it, make sure you don’t run yourself into the ground. Consecutive all nighters will make you crash before you even make it to your finals. I suggest 2 all nighters per week, if you do all nighters well (and minimize distracting internet time) you should only need to do two a week. I usually spread mine out to one on Wednesday and one weekend night.

2. Coffee vs. Tea

Coffee is important to keep the creative juices flowing. Let’s face it, you are already depriving your body of a night’s rest, the amount of caffeine you intake is the least of your worries, but I find over consumption of coffee actually is detrimental to my all nighters. Post 2AM try switching to tea. I find it gives me just enough caffeine to level me out into the wee hours of the morning as well as improving my concentration.

3.  Comfort Clothes.

Like any significant event in your life, you must dress appropriately. Comfort is key! I’m usually at home so the less clothing I’m wearing the comfier I am! Check out my killer all nighter outfit here and here!

4. No Social Media before 2AM!

This is a golden rule for any all nighter. There is a significant drop in social media activity post 2 am (usually) which means when you finally cave and check your Facebook, you will have limited content to be distracted by. There may even be other all nighter students prowling social media late at night. Band together! Tell each other to get off Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and get back to work, we can do this!

5. Alarms.

Set an alarm for a break every two hours. Can we be honest? If you are really working, two hours is a lot of concentration (especially as the night progresses). Take a 10 minute break between each session and chat with a friend or do some exercise! Doing some pushups for squats pulls me out of the mid all nighter lull. And it’s good for you!

Good luck on your exams! If you have your own all nighter trick share them with me in the comments below!

What’s Really Causing Your Dandruff?

We all know what to do when you get flaky skin on your face or body—reach for the lotion! But what about when the flakes find themselves in harder-to-reach spots namely, your scalp? This can be harder to manage and frankly, a bit more embarrassing. And sometimes the cause of your flakes aren’t quite as obvious as dry skin.

Dandruff_Treatment

If you feel like you’ve been suffering from mystery dandruff lately, listen up. According to Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz, Head & Shoulders Global Dermatologist, dandruff sufferers tend to assume that it’s more common in winter months, when in actuality those who have flakes tend to have them all year around. “That being said, there are some environmental factors including changes in season and pollution that can lead to dandruff,” she notes.

But if a change in season doesn’t seem to be the cause of your flakes, there are a number of totally bizarre causes of that we bet you never considered. Get the scoop on some weird causes of your flakes straight from Dr. Lefkowicz—and how to fix ’em!

1) Wet hair

According to Dr. Lefkowicz, sleeping with wet hair or wearing a hat over wet hair can lead to a flaky scalp. As it turns out, the warm, moist environment created from a “wet scalp” is actually a feeding environment for the fungus that causes dandruff. Yikes! And when you are washing your hair, Dr. Lefkowicz suggests staying away from uber hot water, as this can cause irritation and thus, you guessed it, a flaky scalp!

2) Your workout

“Additionally, for people who frequently work out or play sports, it’s best to rinse off after to avoid walking around with a sweaty scalp, which can cause dandruff,” she adds. Not only can the sweat create a moist environment for potential dandruff fungus, but it can also lead to salt and dirt buildup, which also leave behind residue that resembles flakes. Turns out there are some things dry shampoo simply can’t solve!

3) Stress

We all know stress can cause breakouts, but did you know it can also be a trigger for dandruff? “When you’re feeling stressed, your immune system is altered, which can lead to flake flare-ups,” explains Dr. Lefkowicz. You might want This also includes stress related to illness – if you’ve been recently sick or suffered an injury, that can cause stress in the body as well.

4) Your blow dryer

OK, now this one totally shocked us. According to Dr. Lefkowicz, the head from your hot tools, namely your hair dryer, on very hot settings can be a source of flakes. Why you might ask? Well, apparently the extreme heat can actually dehydrate the scalp and contribute to inflammation and irritation, which just like dry skin on your body can lead to unsightly crackling, flaky skin!

Thankfully, you can combat dandruff fairly easily. With scalp treatments and plenty of shampoo options available (Dr. Lefkowicz recommends Head & Shoulders Shampoo with 3 Action Formula, which helps remove the oil buildup on the scalp that contributes to dandruff), treatment is as simple as lather rinse, repeat.

How do you treat your dandruff? Let us know your favorite flake-fighter!

Helpful Hacks to Tame Flyaways

Think about it—your hair goes through a lot between being brushed, styled, and put up in a ponytail. More often than not, you’ll end up with a handful of stray hairs once you’re done fixing your ‘do, but where do all these annoying baby hairs come from? Newsflash: they’re signs of your hair breaking or being pulled straight away from your head. Sure we have lots of hair, so it’s easy to ignore, but at a certain point, those flyaways can get out of hand. So put down the brush, pick up a comb, and read up on these products we love and other helpful hacks.

Oils and waxes to try:

100% Pure Moroccan Argan Oil, $24.00 at Drugstore.com

Moroccan OIl

Spectrum Coconut Oil, $6.31 at Rakuten

Coconut Oil

Bumble and Bumble Sumowax, $29.00 at Sephora

BB Sumowax

TIGI Bed Head A Hair Stick for Cool People, $9.99 at ULTA

Bed Head

Helpful hacks:

1. Spritz hairspray on an old toothbrush (or repurpose a cleaned mascara brush!) and use the bristles to smooth and tame flyaways without disturbing the rest of your hair.

2. Although it may seem strange, dryer sheets work wonders for a lot of things, calming static being one of them. If you find your flyaways stick straight up in the air, rub a dryer sheet between your hands then work them through your hair.

3. Sometimes your hair simply won’t let you win. In this case, strap those flyaways down under a cute headband!

What are your best secrets for taming flyaways? Tell me in the comments below! Follow my blog for more amazing posts!

How to Make Your Blowout Last Through a 5K

For anyone who’s ever sacrificed a good hair day in favor of a workout, listen up! Now you no longer have to give up your pretty mane in order to break a sweat. We chatted with two top hairstylists to learn how you can preserve your blowout, waves, or styled strands through a sweaty workout sesh. Heck, even a summer 5K doesn’t stand a chance!

Keep sweat at bay: The first step to keeping your blowout pristine through that morning run or yoga class is to keep sweat in its place. “This may not be the most fashionable thing to wear to the gym, but a headband will definitely keep the sweat under control,” explains Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair. She suggests opting for a cotton wrap rather than a satin one because cotton helps to absorb excess oil. And surprisingly, this is also one time you might actually want to reach for product. Alvarez explains applying a small amount of anti-frizz product to the root of the hair will aid in fighting sweat.

Ban frizz: Inevitably, if frizz does occur, don’t panic. A blast of air and dry shampoo can salvage your style. “Blowdry your hair while it’s still in your bun, so you don’t lose any volume and help keep the frizz at bay,” explains senior stylist Jill Engelsen at Butterfly Studio in New York. After blow drying, she suggests applying a little dry shampoo—she prefers Kerastase Powder Bluff—at your roots, namely only on your hairline and part. “The trick is holding the can six inches away and spraying in a sweeping motion,” she says. “Then, mimic your shampoo routine on your scalp to work the dirt and oil away!” Finally, finish the rest of the hair with a brush and blowdyer.

Not super sweaty? Ditch the dry shampoo altogether. “After your workout, if you have a minimal amount of sweat, toss your head upside-down and use only the cool air setting on the hairdryer to blast the sweat away,” explains Alvarez. “Heat makes the hair malleable, so blasting a dryer with the warmer settings on any blowout post-workout would then flop any hope of your hair recovering!” Who knew?

Cross out the crease: Often times, creased hair is a runner or gym-goers red badge of honor. But for those times you’d rather not walk around with a dent in your mane, reach for your blow dryer to revive locks. Engelsen suggests switching your blow dryer to high and holding the creased pieces of hair tightly while running heat over the area. Let hair cool to set in!

The Benefits Of Chocolate, According To Science

Almost everyone likes to eat chocolate and no one would complain if you told them it was actually good for you. But that may very well be true.

I recently read on article about it, it said that chocolate isn’t all sugar and calories. Scientific research suggests that there are beneficial properties in dark chocolate. Personally, I prefer milk chocolate but what can you do.

Dark chocolate containts antioxidants, which terminate the chain reactions that create harmful free radicals. Flavonols are present in cocoa, which, acording to recent research, may enhance brain blood flow and improve cognitive health.

Many people (including me) would tell you that eating chocolate has the ability to just make them feel better and there’s science to explain it! Eating chocolate releases serotonin in your brain, which is a ‘feel-good’ chemical and mood stabilizer.

So, why is chocolate so good for you?

  1. The amount of sugar, flavoring and dairy of a piece of chocolate can be identified by the remainder of the precentage cacao it has.
  2. The impact the flavor of chocolate in the processing, you can under- or overroast the bean, keep it raw, ferment differently and more.
  3. Your brain releases the feel-good chemical serotonin when you eat chocolate.

What are you waiting for? Go get yourself a piece of chocolate and enjoy it guilt-free! Follow my blog for more amazing posts like this one!

Dating Advice, Reviews, Tips & Tricks

My Perfect Date Night

A new theme on my blog, let’s talk about love! Anything to do with it, from dating to kissing. Let’s talk about what makes our heart beat faster!

You look great and your makeup is on point for your date, but what are you going to do? Need inspiration for an amazing date with the person you love most? Keep on reading!

Getting Ready

First things first, when you finally plan the date with that one special person, you need to figure out what you’re going to wear. But you need to keep in mind what you’re going to do on the date. Going out for dinner? Wear a nice dress with a pair of heels. Going to do something a bit more casual? Wear something that fits the place you’re going.

If you’re going to play mini golf, you’re not supposed to wear a short dress. If you’re going out for dinner, you shouldn’t wear a jeans and T-shirt. Dress for the occasion.

Car rental

Now this one is very nice, renting a fancy looking car for your date is always a plus. Just like going to prom in a limo. Every girl loves it, even if they don’t admit it. It makes us feel special!

If you’re from the USA, I think the sercise of Turo is perfect. They have many different options and even have an app (for iOS and Android).

Picking up your date in a fancy car, what could be better? It makes for a perfect first impression.

Dinner Date

The best way to get to know someone is by having conversations. Going out for dinner is always a nice option for a date, since you get to talk to the person one on one.

This can be at a fancy restaurant or just a nice place in your neighbourhood.

Or how about a picnic under the stars? It can’t get any more romantic than that! I have never done such a thing and am looking forward to the day someone asks me out an a date like this.

Movie Date

I like this one for a first date, since this can be very awkward. Watching a movie together takes that away since you don’t have to talk as much.

We all know that guys love to take their dates to a scary movie, so they will snuggle up to them for protection? Well that doesn’t work for me, I love those movies!

Saying goodbye

Would you kiss someone after a first date? I might do so, if the date went really well and we have a connection together. But this is all up to you and how you feel after the date. Do remember to never lead someone on, if you don’t like them make it clear. Don’t go on another date if you are not interested!

Never Get Lipstick on Your Teeth Again!

There are few things more embarrassing than realizing you’ve had lipstick on your front teeth during a very long conversation with someone. (Dear other person: Be cool and tell me!) Fortunately, there are ways to prevent it from ever happening again.

Step 1: Concealer

First, apply your shade of concealer to your lips. This will cement your lip product of choice to your pout and keep the color from bleeding. Bonus: it makes the color stay super vibrant!

Step 2: Lip liner

Apply lip liner to the shape of your lips. Then, fill them in with the liner. This acts as an anchor for color, preventing the lipstick you’re about to apply from budging.

Step 3: Lipstick

Cover your pout in lipstick that matches your lip liner. You can do this straight from the tube or with a lipstick brush.

Then, the most important step of all, form an “O” with your lips, put your index finger through the “O,” and slowly pull it out. This will take care of the “danger zone,” and prevent any product getting onto your teeth.

Do you have any tips to prevent smudging your lipstick? Let me know in the comments below! Follow my blog for more amazing posts like this one!

Mythbusters: Why Your Lips Are Actually Chapped

Just because it’s frigid outside doesn’t mean we have to let our pout game suffer. How can we fight chapped lips in the midst of the crisp fall weather scene?  We turned to the experts for advice.

Why lip balm might not be working for you at the moment: Dr. Shevanti Jegasothy, Cosmetic Dermatologist at Miami Skin Institute, says that if you become toodependent on waxed-based lip products, your lips may start to lose all their dead cell layers. This ultimately makes your lips more prone to irritation and chapping. So, like everything else, moderation is key!

Lip balms recommended by the pros: For dry winter months, Dr. Jegasothy advocates waxy lip barriers such as ChapStick Classic, Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, and waxy colored lip pencils–her favorite is MAC Chestnut! “These waxed-based products provide an extra barrier to the skin of the lips, which does not have as much stratum corneum (dead cell layers) as the rest of the skin, which provides our customary (highly-effective) skin barrier against water loss and holds our body’s moisture in,” says Dr. Jegasothy.

products to avoid chapped lips

Similar to Dr. Jegasothy, Dr. Hadley King, dermatologist at NYC’s SKINNEY Medspaalso recommends Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, plus Aquaphor Healing Ointment.

aquaphor healing ointment

The best way to treat dry lips: Since environmental pollutants, excess sun, and wind can cause a mild chronic eczema on the lips, Dr, Jegasothy recommends soaking your lips with warm water and gently brushing with a clean, soft-bristle toothbrush in a circular motion for two minutes on each lip twice a week. Then, apply Polysporin to any of the fissured areas, followed by Cortizone 10. Think of it as little lip facial you can enjoy five minutes before applying lipstick!
