Finals, A Survival Guide: The All Nighter

Since it is that time again.. at least for me it is. As a student myself, I don’t suggest all nighters to anyone. Yes I have done it… a lot. But I never feel better after having engaged in an all nighter. I’m always a little slower for the remainder of the week (especially if I have to do multiple), and it’s hard to make up for this loss of sleep when you have a demanding college schedule that deprives sleep to begin with! The obvious advice I give is to plan your life out so you don’t have to attempt an all nighter (but we all know that isn’t always possible) so I’m here to give you some tips on pulling an all nighter!

1. Spread out the all nighters

Image via Giphy

If you have to do it, make sure you don’t run yourself into the ground. Consecutive all nighters will make you crash before you even make it to your finals. I suggest 2 all nighters per week, if you do all nighters well (and minimize distracting internet time) you should only need to do two a week. I usually spread mine out to one on Wednesday and one weekend night.

2. Coffee vs. Tea

Coffee is important to keep the creative juices flowing. Let’s face it, you are already depriving your body of a night’s rest, the amount of caffeine you intake is the least of your worries, but I find over consumption of coffee actually is detrimental to my all nighters. Post 2AM try switching to tea. I find it gives me just enough caffeine to level me out into the wee hours of the morning as well as improving my concentration.

3.  Comfort Clothes.

Like any significant event in your life, you must dress appropriately. Comfort is key! I’m usually at home so the less clothing I’m wearing the comfier I am! Check out my killer all nighter outfit here and here!

4. No Social Media before 2AM!

This is a golden rule for any all nighter. There is a significant drop in social media activity post 2 am (usually) which means when you finally cave and check your Facebook, you will have limited content to be distracted by. There may even be other all nighter students prowling social media late at night. Band together! Tell each other to get off Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and get back to work, we can do this!

5. Alarms.

Set an alarm for a break every two hours. Can we be honest? If you are really working, two hours is a lot of concentration (especially as the night progresses). Take a 10 minute break between each session and chat with a friend or do some exercise! Doing some pushups for squats pulls me out of the mid all nighter lull. And it’s good for you!

Good luck on your exams! If you have your own all nighter trick share them with me in the comments below!

The Best Workout Hairstyles, According to Hair Type

Ever wonder why your friend’s perfectly coiffed ponytail stays in place through a long, hard workout and your droops within seconds? Well, just as with everything in life, what works for one person, might not for another. How you style your strands for a workout (and how they look after) depends largely on your hair type. Not sure what your ideal style is? We chatted with Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair, to learn her pro tips for preserving every type of hairstyle through a workout.

Workout hairstyle

For maintaining bouncier, smooth blowout: Alvarez says rolling your hair into a sock bun or hair donut would help keep the smooth shape of this style. “Add a tiny bit of dry oil like Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil to the ends before tucking them in,” she says. And avoid pins! “The problem with using pins is that they will leave indents on the hair—not to mention pins are not the most comfortable if you’re working out!” she says.

For reviving curls: Flip your head upside down and lightly finger comb through your hair to breakup any knots, she says. Gather all of your hair into a pony at the highest point of your head and secure looselywith a hair tie. “Be careful not to tighten the hair tie or it will create an unwanted crease,” she adds.
Pro tip: roll the hair into the direction of your curls and secure with a hair pin to maintain your curly Q’s post gym session.

For preserving beach waves: For maintaining your look just-off-the-beach look, begin by spraying a dry shampoo, such as Dove Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo, on your roots at the crown of your head. This removes oil and adds volume. At your part, create a French braid going down to the nape of your neck and secure it loosely with a hair tie. Twist the braid and wrap it around the base, securing with open pins, adds Alvarez. Lightly spray the finished look with your fave hairspray and you’re good to go.

Being a Blogger

Liebster Award Nomination

Today’s post will be about my Liebster Blog Award nomination by the amazing Angelspartaness from AngelSpartaness Lifestyle. She writes about all topics that interest me: beauty, fashion, food, lifestyle and so on. Altough I haven’t known her for all that long, I’ve come to really enjoy her blog and love to interact with her! You should all go check out her blog, it looks amazing! The site is so nicely put together.

I really like the concept of these type of blogging awards. Of course there are some rules, which I have listed below. As a blogger you get to nominate other bloggers who you deem worthy of an award, it’s not something official but it is still very nice to recieve. I’m not really sure how it all started, but I do know that it has been going around for quite some time now.

When you get nominated, you’ll be asked some questions which you obviously awnser in a new post on your blog. One of the rules also says that you have to thank the blogger who nominated you, but I find this a given. Isn’t it just common courtesy to thank someone when they award you? Anyway, let’s get this started!

The questions:

  1. Why did you start blogging?

This is something that I have awnsered many times before and you can also find the awnser in my About page. In short, I started it as a hobby, a way to express myself and I do hope that I can help other people along the way.

  2. What do you like/dislike the most about blogging?

I like everything about blogging. Comming up with new ideas, sharing my opinion, getting to know other bloggers. The only thing I dislike (just a little though) is how timeconsuming it can be. Currently, I am studying for exams and I feel horrible for the lack of content I am producing right now. I can’t wait till summer, so I can focus myself on the things that I truely enjoy (blogging).

  3. If you could travel anywhere in the world for vacation, where would you go?

Actually, since last week, I want to visit a place called ‘Lombok’. I didn’t even know it excisted untill I saw the name on a can of CocaCola! They are currently giving away trips to various locations and that’s how I discovered Lombok! It’s such a pretty place and I really hope to visit it one day.

  4. What top 3 beauty/hygiene products can you not live without?

Mascara. I will not walk out the door without putting some on! Next is deoderant, because I sweat way too much and I can’t live without because of that. And the last one would be body lotion, you gotta take care of your skin!

  5. What one book would you always recommend someone to read?

Harry Potter. No question there. But most peoply have already read them so.. Mayby I should pick something else? Although I can’t think of something that you really have to read. Lets stick with all of the Harry Potter books.

  6. What are a few of your favorite hobbies or downtime activities?

Blogging obviously! Other than that, I really like writing in general. I also enjoy playing videogames, wathing anime and reading manga. Yes, I am in fact a big nerd (don’t judge me).

  7. What’s an interesting fact someone would be surprised to learn about you?

This is something I have never mentioned before (online). Once, when I was only 10 years old, I was bitten by a monkey! My best friend at the time had one as a pet. We were playing with dolls (from Winx Club) and the monkey was jealous of me, since it wasn’t allowed to play with those dolls. So it bit me. And ever since that day, I started disliking monkeys. End of random, weird, useless story.

  8. What is your favorite color and why?

Black, because it’s not even a color. Black is the absence of all color. If you put a filter on light (sunlight is white) you can remove certain types of colors (red, green and blue) If you remove all of those, you’ll get black. How I love physics!

  9. What are 3 of your top goals for life? (Ex: a big family, your own company, etc.)

Eating without getting fat. Loving without getting hurt. Making money without working. The goals everyone has in their life!

  10. Where do you hope to be in life and work by this time next year?

I hope that I’ll be happy, that is the only thing I can truely wish for.

  11. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Salad, because you can have every type of salad: pizza salad, ice cream salad, … (yes I stole this from Tumblr).

  1. Thank blogger(s) who nominated you
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you
  3. Nominate at least 5 bloggers but no more than 11 who deserve the award
  4. Tell those bloggers you nominated them
  5. Create 11 original questions for the nominees to answer

I can only pick 11 as said in the rules above. How am I supposed to pick only 11 in a vast world of bloggers! I always find this so hard to do. Therefor, I’ll do things a bit differently this time. YOU! Yes, you, you are hereby nominated! Every single person reading this, make a post right now! Everyone who made the effort of starting a blog, deserves to be nominated for this award!

As for the questions, I would actually like to see you awnser the same questions I did. I would love to know how other people would awnser these. Since I did awnser some rediculous things.

Hope you enjoyed reading this and I am looking forward to reading your posts, let me know if you’re going to make one! Follow my blog for more amazing posts like this one!

Expert Tips For Packing Your Travel Beauty Bag

We’ve all been there. Your whole vacation is planned out perfectly. But then it comes down to actually having to pack for said vacation and you suddenly are sent into a frenzy trying to decide which products actually make the cut. To help calm all of your packing woes, we chatted with Hitha Palepu, travel expert and brains behind Hitha on the Go. Read on for her best packing tips!

How did you decide what your essential travel beauty items are? Do you have any secret favorites you can share with us?

“For me to pack a specific beauty item, I have to use it daily and not be satisfied with an alternative product. I can use any provided body wash or lotion, but I’m a loyal user of TULA’s cleanser and mask, this La Roche Posay eye cream (the only one that works for me!), and Glossier’s priming moisturizer and balm.”

What’s the best way to avoid spills without adding the bulk of Ziploc bags?

“First, ditch the plastic bag. Invest in a sturdy zippered quart-sized bag that is an inch or so thick. Not only will you fill more products in that bag, you’ll never have to worry about any spills escaping the bag to your other belongings. I try to avoid refillable bottles and invest in travel-sized versions of my favorite products, which are less likely to leak. The best refillable bottles are actually empty prescription bottles— totally leak-proof and you probably have a few in your medicine cabinet at home!”

What are the best sites or brands for purchasing travel cosmetic cases?

“I have this Anya Hindmarch case, which was a huge splurge. Hudson+Bleecker andStephanie Johnson makes equally beautiful dopp kits and toiletry or makeup bags that are more affordable. FLIGHT001 is the most affordable, and they also have great designs.”

How far in advance do you pack?

“I begin the packing process a week before my trip: writing out a list, [doing] laundry or dry cleaning, restocking toiletries. The actual packing happens the night before. The day of the trip, I pack my makeup as I’m applying it and toss it in my suitcase and away we go!”

Are there any multi-purpose beauty products that you’d recommend?

“Coconut oil! It is the ultimate beauty multitasker—a moisturizer, makeup remover, shave gel, and hangover remedy (see: oil pulling). My liquids bag always has this travel-friendly jar packed at all times. From a makeup perspective, I love Wander Beauty’s blush and illuminator stick.”

How do you keep compacts from shattering?

“My Hudson+Bleecker makeup bags are lightly padded. Since I’ve started using them, my compacts have never shattered (knocks on wood)!”

Do you pack your toiletries and cosmetics based on where you’re headed, or do you have a go-to kit?

“My basic toiletries (face, dental, eye, and skincare) are always pre-packed in my liquids bag and a Hudson+Bleecker dopp kit (for non-liquid products). I’ll make a note of trip-specific products (sunscreen for a beach, a thick face cream for cold destinations) when I’m writing my packing list and pack them the night before. With makeup, I pack my bag as I’m applying it and will select products that are suited for my destination and the type of trip.”

Courtesy @hithapalepu

We heard you have a book coming out soon! Can you tell us a little bit about it?

“Yes! My book, How To Pack, will be coming out February 2017. I’ll be sharing my entire packing method, from selecting the perfect products and pre-packing like a pro. There will also be my handpicked items for specific trips and destinations. It’s also one of the prettiest books I’ve ever seen, with stunning illustrations and really nice paper. But I may be a bit biased.”

How has co-founding Bridge2Act given you new insights to traveling? (Bridge2Act is a digital platform that streamlines charitable donations.)

“In working with our charity partners, I’m getting a look at the world that I’ve never experienced for myself. What’s necessary for visiting rural villages in Africa is very different than what I had packed for a typical business meeting. What amazes me is how efficiently these founders and executive directors pack, and how they always leave room for gifts to the sites they’re visiting.”

Any last advice for women on how to figure out their travel beauty must haves?

“First, take note of your daily beauty routine. What products do you have to use? What are products that you can swap out easily? Are there liquidless swaps (solids, towelettes) that you can make for products you’re not obsessed with? Ditch the baggie and purchase a nice zippered quart-sized bag that you love. Your suitcase is your home away from home, and packing familiar products is a great way to feel grounded when you’re on the go.”

How to Make Your Blowout Last Through a 5K

For anyone who’s ever sacrificed a good hair day in favor of a workout, listen up! Now you no longer have to give up your pretty mane in order to break a sweat. We chatted with two top hairstylists to learn how you can preserve your blowout, waves, or styled strands through a sweaty workout sesh. Heck, even a summer 5K doesn’t stand a chance!

Keep sweat at bay: The first step to keeping your blowout pristine through that morning run or yoga class is to keep sweat in its place. “This may not be the most fashionable thing to wear to the gym, but a headband will definitely keep the sweat under control,” explains Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair. She suggests opting for a cotton wrap rather than a satin one because cotton helps to absorb excess oil. And surprisingly, this is also one time you might actually want to reach for product. Alvarez explains applying a small amount of anti-frizz product to the root of the hair will aid in fighting sweat.

Ban frizz: Inevitably, if frizz does occur, don’t panic. A blast of air and dry shampoo can salvage your style. “Blowdry your hair while it’s still in your bun, so you don’t lose any volume and help keep the frizz at bay,” explains senior stylist Jill Engelsen at Butterfly Studio in New York. After blow drying, she suggests applying a little dry shampoo—she prefers Kerastase Powder Bluff—at your roots, namely only on your hairline and part. “The trick is holding the can six inches away and spraying in a sweeping motion,” she says. “Then, mimic your shampoo routine on your scalp to work the dirt and oil away!” Finally, finish the rest of the hair with a brush and blowdyer.

Not super sweaty? Ditch the dry shampoo altogether. “After your workout, if you have a minimal amount of sweat, toss your head upside-down and use only the cool air setting on the hairdryer to blast the sweat away,” explains Alvarez. “Heat makes the hair malleable, so blasting a dryer with the warmer settings on any blowout post-workout would then flop any hope of your hair recovering!” Who knew?

Cross out the crease: Often times, creased hair is a runner or gym-goers red badge of honor. But for those times you’d rather not walk around with a dent in your mane, reach for your blow dryer to revive locks. Engelsen suggests switching your blow dryer to high and holding the creased pieces of hair tightly while running heat over the area. Let hair cool to set in!

4 Suprising Uses For Oats

You’re probably familiar with some uses for oats, such as oatmeal granola and cookies. But did you know that oats have plenty of uses besides feeding your appetite?

The versatile grain is handy for a number of non-dietary purposes, from creating soothing beauty products to making natural clay for your kids.

Oats as a beauty regimen:

When it comes to beauty and skincare products, oats and oatmeal have been a long time favorite ingredient. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, oats are an effective home remedy for relieving itchy skin. Oats are also a popular option for natural face masks or scrubs, wether bought in a store or created at home. Mix oats wit a tiny bit of salt and water for a DIY scrub.

More ways to use oats:

Some other surprising ways to tap into the power of the versatile grain:

  • Put an open bowl of oats in your fridge to help eliminate stinky smells.
  • Mix rolled oats with flour and add a bit of water and food coloring to create molding clay for your kids to play with.
  • Add oats to ground beef to get more bang for your buck when making meatloaf or meatballs.

This weeks fitness update

The achievements I got so far:

This week I completed 3 challenges:

F-16: for lifting a total of 20 000 kilo’s.

Going strong: for being active for over 10 hours.

Crunch: for doing 200 crunches.

Squatter (the actual one, the last one had another name in Dutch but I the translation is the same): for doing 150 squats.

Push it: this one is for doing push ups, but it didn’t say how much.

Zippo: for burning a total of 5000 calories.

Powerhunk (or something like that): for doing my first 50 power exercises.

Around the corner: this one is for going on walks, but it also didn’t say the amount of steps, the distance or anything of the sort.

The challenges I completed:

Doing 20 pushups in one rep.

Burning 2000 calories a week.

Next week I’ll do these again and try to burn 3000 calories and do 50 pushups in one rep. Well, to be honest with you, the pushups I do aren’t the regular ones so it’s not all that impressive. Maybe I’ll even be able to do the plank for 2 minutes.

My stats after this week are:

6532 calories burned (+3536)

1035 minutes of activity (+642)

56 km (+29)

1324 fitness points (+7548)

(you get these when doing challenges, getting achievements and doing sport in general I believe)

I’ll give an update on my stats every week and I’ll mention everything else aswell..
