Weird Product Alert: Salmon Egg Cream for your Face

Word on the street is that eggs are as good for your skin as they are your body. Not just any eggs, but fish eggs, to be exact. We did a little homework and came across a ground-breaking (and totally weird) cream from the South Korean brand Besolbo that beauty fanatics across the globe are buzzing over. Can we interest you in a little salmon egg 101? Allow us to introduce you to the Besolbo Royal Salmon Egg Return Cream.

salmonegg

The scoop: With salmon egg as a key component, the Besolbo cream is rich in nutrients. It essentially regulates the skin’s moisture and nutrition production to enhance the skin’s color, texture, and overall condition. It’s ideal for hypersensitive and sagging skin. The cream ultimately helps to eliminate the skin’s imperfections.

How to use it: After washing and toning, take two to three pieces of the cream and mix into your palm until it feels like gelatin. Apply evenly over your face and leave it overnight. Rinse it with water in the morning.

Price: $26 on Amazon.com

The Best Workout Hairstyles, According to Hair Type

Ever wonder why your friend’s perfectly coiffed ponytail stays in place through a long, hard workout and your droops within seconds? Well, just as with everything in life, what works for one person, might not for another. How you style your strands for a workout (and how they look after) depends largely on your hair type. Not sure what your ideal style is? We chatted with Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair, to learn her pro tips for preserving every type of hairstyle through a workout.

Workout hairstyle

For maintaining bouncier, smooth blowout: Alvarez says rolling your hair into a sock bun or hair donut would help keep the smooth shape of this style. “Add a tiny bit of dry oil like Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil to the ends before tucking them in,” she says. And avoid pins! “The problem with using pins is that they will leave indents on the hair—not to mention pins are not the most comfortable if you’re working out!” she says.

For reviving curls: Flip your head upside down and lightly finger comb through your hair to breakup any knots, she says. Gather all of your hair into a pony at the highest point of your head and secure looselywith a hair tie. “Be careful not to tighten the hair tie or it will create an unwanted crease,” she adds.
Pro tip: roll the hair into the direction of your curls and secure with a hair pin to maintain your curly Q’s post gym session.

For preserving beach waves: For maintaining your look just-off-the-beach look, begin by spraying a dry shampoo, such as Dove Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo, on your roots at the crown of your head. This removes oil and adds volume. At your part, create a French braid going down to the nape of your neck and secure it loosely with a hair tie. Twist the braid and wrap it around the base, securing with open pins, adds Alvarez. Lightly spray the finished look with your fave hairspray and you’re good to go.

What’s Really Causing Your Dandruff?

We all know what to do when you get flaky skin on your face or body—reach for the lotion! But what about when the flakes find themselves in harder-to-reach spots namely, your scalp? This can be harder to manage and frankly, a bit more embarrassing. And sometimes the cause of your flakes aren’t quite as obvious as dry skin.

Dandruff_Treatment

If you feel like you’ve been suffering from mystery dandruff lately, listen up. According to Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz, Head & Shoulders Global Dermatologist, dandruff sufferers tend to assume that it’s more common in winter months, when in actuality those who have flakes tend to have them all year around. “That being said, there are some environmental factors including changes in season and pollution that can lead to dandruff,” she notes.

But if a change in season doesn’t seem to be the cause of your flakes, there are a number of totally bizarre causes of that we bet you never considered. Get the scoop on some weird causes of your flakes straight from Dr. Lefkowicz—and how to fix ’em!

1) Wet hair

According to Dr. Lefkowicz, sleeping with wet hair or wearing a hat over wet hair can lead to a flaky scalp. As it turns out, the warm, moist environment created from a “wet scalp” is actually a feeding environment for the fungus that causes dandruff. Yikes! And when you are washing your hair, Dr. Lefkowicz suggests staying away from uber hot water, as this can cause irritation and thus, you guessed it, a flaky scalp!

2) Your workout

“Additionally, for people who frequently work out or play sports, it’s best to rinse off after to avoid walking around with a sweaty scalp, which can cause dandruff,” she adds. Not only can the sweat create a moist environment for potential dandruff fungus, but it can also lead to salt and dirt buildup, which also leave behind residue that resembles flakes. Turns out there are some things dry shampoo simply can’t solve!

3) Stress

We all know stress can cause breakouts, but did you know it can also be a trigger for dandruff? “When you’re feeling stressed, your immune system is altered, which can lead to flake flare-ups,” explains Dr. Lefkowicz. You might want This also includes stress related to illness – if you’ve been recently sick or suffered an injury, that can cause stress in the body as well.

4) Your blow dryer

OK, now this one totally shocked us. According to Dr. Lefkowicz, the head from your hot tools, namely your hair dryer, on very hot settings can be a source of flakes. Why you might ask? Well, apparently the extreme heat can actually dehydrate the scalp and contribute to inflammation and irritation, which just like dry skin on your body can lead to unsightly crackling, flaky skin!

Thankfully, you can combat dandruff fairly easily. With scalp treatments and plenty of shampoo options available (Dr. Lefkowicz recommends Head & Shoulders Shampoo with 3 Action Formula, which helps remove the oil buildup on the scalp that contributes to dandruff), treatment is as simple as lather rinse, repeat.

How do you treat your dandruff? Let us know your favorite flake-fighter!

Helpful Hacks to Tame Flyaways

Think about it—your hair goes through a lot between being brushed, styled, and put up in a ponytail. More often than not, you’ll end up with a handful of stray hairs once you’re done fixing your ‘do, but where do all these annoying baby hairs come from? Newsflash: they’re signs of your hair breaking or being pulled straight away from your head. Sure we have lots of hair, so it’s easy to ignore, but at a certain point, those flyaways can get out of hand. So put down the brush, pick up a comb, and read up on these products we love and other helpful hacks.

Oils and waxes to try:

100% Pure Moroccan Argan Oil, $24.00 at Drugstore.com

Moroccan OIl

Spectrum Coconut Oil, $6.31 at Rakuten

Coconut Oil

Bumble and Bumble Sumowax, $29.00 at Sephora

BB Sumowax

TIGI Bed Head A Hair Stick for Cool People, $9.99 at ULTA

Bed Head

Helpful hacks:

1. Spritz hairspray on an old toothbrush (or repurpose a cleaned mascara brush!) and use the bristles to smooth and tame flyaways without disturbing the rest of your hair.

2. Although it may seem strange, dryer sheets work wonders for a lot of things, calming static being one of them. If you find your flyaways stick straight up in the air, rub a dryer sheet between your hands then work them through your hair.

3. Sometimes your hair simply won’t let you win. In this case, strap those flyaways down under a cute headband!

What are your best secrets for taming flyaways? Tell me in the comments below! Follow my blog for more amazing posts!

You Now Will Have a New Sheet Mask to Obsess Over

ICYMI—sheet masks are still going strong. And there’s a new one that I’m guessing is about to take center stage. Meet Slice Masks. Slice Masks hail from Korean beauty brand Kocostar and are actually a part of the sheet mask family. These unique little masks are just about the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

SliceMaskSheet.png

Slice Masks are pretty much what they sound like—tiny disk-like masks cut into shapes of fruit or flowers that indicate what their targeted use should be. (Cucumber is hydrating, lemon is brightening, tomato is calming, etc.)

To use, cleanse and tone as normal then place the slices onto your face and leave on for 10-20 minutes. Then peel off and rub in the serum to fully sink in. You can use all 12 masks at once for a totally Snappable moment or use just a few to target a certain area—just be warned to use the other masks quickly or share with a friend!

Right now the only place to snatch up this new mask in the US is at ASOS or SokoGlam, but I’ll be on the look out to see if these new K-beauty obsessions make their way to other beauty aisles.

Have you tried a slice mask? Let me know your thoughts below in the comments!

How to Master a Short Haircut For Summer

Summer heat has its major pros: beach days, tanning, long drives with the windows down…But the major con? Humidity. My curly-haired girls out there may sympathize a little extra, but there’s nothing more frustrating than wanting to enjoy the weather and finding that you’re sweating the day away, and your hair has tripled in size.

Mizu Salon in New York, stylist Judy McGuinness to solves our humidity woes once and for all! My hair is naturally wavy but poofs up on a bad day, which leads to me immediately tying it up in a bun. I was tired of having my hair in a top knot for half of the week and figured that summer was the perfect time to experiment with a shorter look.

While Judy and I were on Facebook Live, I had the opportunity to chat with her about hair upkeep, communicating with your stylist, and a ton of other things! If you missed it, click here to watch the cut and here to see how my look was styled!

Looking to get a shorter cut for summer yourself? Here’s how my cut went down. Plus, Judy’s top tips for styling a short ‘do!

The inspiration: Style Blogger Aimee Song

How to talk to your stylist:

Communicating with your stylist is key! “When you come in, I definitely always go over how often you’re styling your hair and your lifestyle,” Judy says. “Pictures are amazing, and sharing what you like and don’t like in general helps too!” If you’re like me, you’ve definitely had a little bit of salon anxiety—to calm that, Judy recommends being thorough during your consultation with your stylist, so you’re totally relaxed before you’re even having your hair shampooed.

What to expect during the cut:

After talking through what I was looking for and showing her my inspo, Judy washed my hair with Kerastase’s Discipline shampoo and conditioner to tame frizz right from the start. She then used a razor to cut my hair to give it a softer look. Concerned about constant maintenance? Don’t be! With a shorter cut, Judy suggests getting your hair cleaned up every six to eight weeks, and for longer hair, a trim every season will do!

How to style your shorter ‘do:

After blowing out my hair with a paddle brush to stop the ends from bending out, Judy loosely curled my hair using a Hot Tools Marcel Curling Iron with a 1 1/4-inch barrel. She used Oribe Maximista thickening spray and Thick-Dry finishing spray to fight frizz and build body. She finished with a little Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil to give my look a healthy shine!

The case for going short:

“This is a cut that can look good on so many different hair types and textures—it’s just about where you choose the length and the layers.” Judy explains, adding this style is versatile when it comes to styling too! If I want to skip the hot tools, I can easily useR + Co’s Aircraft Mousse to hold my natural wave. To add texture to my roots, we tried R + Co’s Badlands Paste, which is a dry shampoo that contains volcanic ash to soak up oils!

“If your hair is frizzing, usually it just wants moisture,” Judy reminds. The key to frizz-free hair is keeping it happy—a.k.a. keeping it healthy by using products that will deliver the hydration your hair is craving!

Expert Tips For Packing Your Travel Beauty Bag

We’ve all been there. Your whole vacation is planned out perfectly. But then it comes down to actually having to pack for said vacation and you suddenly are sent into a frenzy trying to decide which products actually make the cut. To help calm all of your packing woes, we chatted with Hitha Palepu, travel expert and brains behind Hitha on the Go. Read on for her best packing tips!

How did you decide what your essential travel beauty items are? Do you have any secret favorites you can share with us?

“For me to pack a specific beauty item, I have to use it daily and not be satisfied with an alternative product. I can use any provided body wash or lotion, but I’m a loyal user of TULA’s cleanser and mask, this La Roche Posay eye cream (the only one that works for me!), and Glossier’s priming moisturizer and balm.”

What’s the best way to avoid spills without adding the bulk of Ziploc bags?

“First, ditch the plastic bag. Invest in a sturdy zippered quart-sized bag that is an inch or so thick. Not only will you fill more products in that bag, you’ll never have to worry about any spills escaping the bag to your other belongings. I try to avoid refillable bottles and invest in travel-sized versions of my favorite products, which are less likely to leak. The best refillable bottles are actually empty prescription bottles— totally leak-proof and you probably have a few in your medicine cabinet at home!”

What are the best sites or brands for purchasing travel cosmetic cases?

“I have this Anya Hindmarch case, which was a huge splurge. Hudson+Bleecker andStephanie Johnson makes equally beautiful dopp kits and toiletry or makeup bags that are more affordable. FLIGHT001 is the most affordable, and they also have great designs.”

How far in advance do you pack?

“I begin the packing process a week before my trip: writing out a list, [doing] laundry or dry cleaning, restocking toiletries. The actual packing happens the night before. The day of the trip, I pack my makeup as I’m applying it and toss it in my suitcase and away we go!”

Are there any multi-purpose beauty products that you’d recommend?

“Coconut oil! It is the ultimate beauty multitasker—a moisturizer, makeup remover, shave gel, and hangover remedy (see: oil pulling). My liquids bag always has this travel-friendly jar packed at all times. From a makeup perspective, I love Wander Beauty’s blush and illuminator stick.”

How do you keep compacts from shattering?

“My Hudson+Bleecker makeup bags are lightly padded. Since I’ve started using them, my compacts have never shattered (knocks on wood)!”

Do you pack your toiletries and cosmetics based on where you’re headed, or do you have a go-to kit?

“My basic toiletries (face, dental, eye, and skincare) are always pre-packed in my liquids bag and a Hudson+Bleecker dopp kit (for non-liquid products). I’ll make a note of trip-specific products (sunscreen for a beach, a thick face cream for cold destinations) when I’m writing my packing list and pack them the night before. With makeup, I pack my bag as I’m applying it and will select products that are suited for my destination and the type of trip.”

Courtesy @hithapalepu

We heard you have a book coming out soon! Can you tell us a little bit about it?

“Yes! My book, How To Pack, will be coming out February 2017. I’ll be sharing my entire packing method, from selecting the perfect products and pre-packing like a pro. There will also be my handpicked items for specific trips and destinations. It’s also one of the prettiest books I’ve ever seen, with stunning illustrations and really nice paper. But I may be a bit biased.”

How has co-founding Bridge2Act given you new insights to traveling? (Bridge2Act is a digital platform that streamlines charitable donations.)

“In working with our charity partners, I’m getting a look at the world that I’ve never experienced for myself. What’s necessary for visiting rural villages in Africa is very different than what I had packed for a typical business meeting. What amazes me is how efficiently these founders and executive directors pack, and how they always leave room for gifts to the sites they’re visiting.”

Any last advice for women on how to figure out their travel beauty must haves?

“First, take note of your daily beauty routine. What products do you have to use? What are products that you can swap out easily? Are there liquidless swaps (solids, towelettes) that you can make for products you’re not obsessed with? Ditch the baggie and purchase a nice zippered quart-sized bag that you love. Your suitcase is your home away from home, and packing familiar products is a great way to feel grounded when you’re on the go.”

What are your travel necessities? Sound off in the comments!
