On the Balcony
Yui: …There’s a full moon tonight.
Yui: I know that full moons are supposed to entrance vampires..
Yui: It’s beautiful… and mysterious… I can’t imagine how anyone wouldn’t be awestruck by it.
Yui: (But lately… whenever I look at the moon… my body grows hot for some reason.)
Yui: (I guess I really am… awakening…)
Subaru: You should know already what happens to vampires on the night of a full moon… Don’t be stupid, stay away from me.
Yui: …I know, but… there is a comfortable distance between us.
Yui: (I’m standing about an arm’s length away from him…)
Yui: (I know that isn’t what he meant, but for some reason I want to be near him right now.)
Yui: (There really must be something wrong with me…)
Subaru: …Are you stupid? That’s not what I meant.
Subaru: I’m a vampire. It doesn’t matter if you’re an arm’s length or ten meters away from me.
Subaru: I can close those distances in less than a second.
Subaru: …You know how dangerous a full moon could be for you, so why do you insist on staying with me?
Subaru: Would you honestly be fine if I ate you whole right here?
Subaru: You wouldn’t be able to escape from me. Scream and cry all you want and I still wouldn’t stop.
Subaru: That’s our natural instinct– and I’ll devour every last piece of you. Are you prepared for that?
Subaru: …Are you prepared for what could happen… if you keep staying at my side..?
Subaru: ….Hah. You’re not ready at all. Go somewhere else already.
Subaru: I’d feel a lot calmer if you did.
Yui: (It kind of sounds like he actually does want me to be with him.)
Yui: (I hope I’m not just being selfish by thinking that, though.)
In the Garden
Christa: Yes, you’re a good boy, Subaru. Make sure you’re always being on your best behavior, okay?
Christa: Do that, and you’ll even appear different to my eyes… One day you’ll stand up tall and dignified.
Christa: Yes… And then, with that blood flowing through your veins, which is even uglier and filthier than anyone else’s, you–
Christa: You should have never been born!
Christa: If you hadn’t been born, I could have escaped! My body would have forever been pure and undirtied…
Christa: It’s your fault…
Christa: It’s your fault!!!!
End of Flashback
On the Balcony
Yui: What’s wrong? You were staring off into space. Were you thinking about something?
Subaru: Nothing… It has nothing to do with you.
Yui: …Okay, but…
Subaru: ..Hn… The moon tonight has a rotten color.
Yui: …Yeah, it’s really pretty…
Subaru: Are you stupid? I said it was rotten.
Yui: But that’s just your way of saying it’s pretty, right?
Subaru: …nh. You’re really fuckin’ obnoxious.
Feeling a little worried, I tried talking to Subaru-kun—who gazed up at the moon with an expression of sorrow on his face.
A look of unease flashed through his features, and he seemed as though he was stressing out over something far too much. But he did nothing except slowly shake his head.
I’ve noticed that that expression of his appears from time to time. And sometimes, it makes my chest tighten up really badly.
If Subaru-kun doesn’t tell me anything, then there’s nothing I can do to help him.
And I’m certain I must be just an inconvenience to him, since I don’t know what I should do for him.
I resisted the urge to reach out and hold his hand, instead standing side-by-side with him. Then, together we watched, looking up at the full moon above us.
— I pretended not to be bothered by this terrible thirst which was parching my throat.
