Dermatologist Top 5 Tips for Your Perfect Summer Skincare Routine

Think upping your SPF game is the only switch you need to make when it comes to transitioning your daily beauty routine for summer months? Think again. We tapped two top dermatologists to get their best tips for crafting the perfect summer skincare routine.

1. Ditch the moisturizer.

“With hotter temps and higher humidity, summer allows for a lighter skincare routine,” says Dr. Hadley King, dermatologist at SKINNEY Medspa in New York City. Because you are likely to need fewer heavy moisturizers, making the switch to a serum or light oil-free moisturizer is a great option. If oil or pimples are more your source of concern, ditching moisturizer completely might just be your best option. “The only truly necessary areas to moisturize year round are the skin around the mouth and the eyelid,” says Dr. S. Manjula Jegasothy, founder of Miami Skin Institute. “If you feel that you must moisturize, or feel tight and dry on any other parts of the face, consider using a light-as-air vitamin C serum to undo new sun damage caused by lazy summer afternoons by the pool.” She recommends Clarins Mission Perfection Serum or Skinceuticals C E Ferluic—both Influenster faves!

 2. Find the right cleanser.

Believe it or not, the right cleanser might just depend on your climate. (Let’s be honest, summer in Florida is very different than summer in LA!) For humid climates, Dr. Jegasothy recommends trying a salicylic acid-based cleanser like the ever-popular Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash.

Pro tip: Use the salicylic acid cleanser as a “mask” by allowing it to dry on your face for a full 20 minutes once a week. “You will find that you will sweat and shine less at those hot summer happy hours,” Dr. Jegasothy says.

Find yourself in a dryer, less humid locale? Consider using a slightly gentler cleanser such as Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Cream Cleanser.

3. Skip the stronger ingredients.

If your normal skincare routine contains stronger active ingredients, this might be the time to lay off of them. According to Dr. King, cutting back on skincare products such as retinoids and alpha and beta hydroxy acids might be a good idea during the summer months, as these products tend to make skin more sentitive to the sun.

4. Don’t forget the lips!

Although chapped lips might seem to improve in humid summer climates, the risk of UV damage to your pout can in the short term cause a chapping-like phenomenon, and even worse, in the long-term, potentially skin cancer, explains Dr. Jegasothy. “In fact, skin cancer occurs on the lips more commonly than many other areas of the face!” she says. Use a SPF 30 lip balm such as Blistex Five Star Lip Protection for maximum protection.

5. Embrace SPF.

OK, so paying attention to SPF is pretty darn important in sunny summertime. Although you should definitely be wearing suncreen daily, remembering to reapply is crucial when spending more time outside. “Perhaps the most important habit you need to change for summer sunscreen optimization is reapplying it every two hours once outside,” says Dr. Jegasothy. Just because a label says water or sweat resitant doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Reapply and often!
