There is sugar in virtually everything we eat. But, not all sugars are created equal. Refined sugars are the processed sweeteners found in most packaged products, whereas unrefined sugars occur naturally in fruits and vegetables. Eliminating processed sugar from your diet can lead to better health over all. To get a jump start on the transition to natural sweeteners, try these tasty alternatives.
Madhava Coconut Sugar
Antioxidant and nutrient rich, coconuts provide healthy fats. Coconut sugar is an awesome substitute for processed sugar. Try it in your tea or coffee—it tastes similar to brown sugar. Side note: you can find it at your local grocer or Whole Foods.
Bob’s Red Mill Date Sugar
This powdery sugar is made from dried and powdered dates. The process is easy enough: slice and slowly roast the dates, let them completely cool, and throw them in a food processor. If you don’t want to make it yourself, you can always grab some of Bob’s Red Mill to replace some of the refined sugar in your everyday recipes.
Raw honey is simply a must-have in the house. As a naturally occurring antibacterial, this stuff helps boost your immune system and has a high antioxidant level (a great soother for a sore throat). Aside from the heath benefits, it’s absolutely delish on top of plain yogurt or oatmeal with berries.
Coombs Family Farm Organic Maple Syrup
The OG, farm-family sweetener is an awesome swap when baking—especially in savory banana or zucchini bread (with unsweetened dark chocolate, always). Manganese and zinc in Maple sap help to keep your immune system strong and provide lasting energy.
