Best Lipsticks for Your Skin Tone

You’ve heard the questions before: Are you an autumn or a winter? Does your skin have warm or cool undertones? There’s a reason these have been the governing principles for makeup for ages: They just work. The same holds true for finding the perfect lip color, according to Mimi Johnson, an Atlanta-based makeup artist and the owner of the Glamatory. Your skin’s undertones are a great guide to the kinds of lip colors that will work best for you. But that doesn’t mean you can’t break the rules every now and then. Read on for our top tips to pick out the perfect lip shade to fit any look.

If you’re sampling shades in the store, the best way can actually be to try a whole range out on your fingertips, according to Katrina Hess, a Boston-based makeup artist and owner of the Makeup and Brow Studio. You can see the colors react with the acidity of your fingertip, she says, and your eye will draw to the colors that look best.

Ready to try it out on your lips? Exfoliate with a sugar scrub first (Influensters likeBurt’s Bees Sugar Scrub) to get rid of dry skin on lips, Hess says, to get the accurate color of the lipstick. For darker lips, she recommends layering a concealerunderneath as well, to help the shades of lighter lipsticks shine through.

Lots of colors look great on fair skin, according to Emmy-nominated makeup artistKathleen Marsh. Pinks, peaches, and nudes complement pinker skin, as do browns with a pink undertone, sheer berry, mauves, and reds. Skip anything that will wash you out, is too brown, or overpowers your skin tone.

You can pretty much wear any shade of red, Marsh says, from blue-based reds, to brown-reds, to true reds. Coral looks great too, but avoid orange, pink-based reds, nudes, and berry shades.

Try dramatic plum, raisin, coffee, deep wine, and plum-red shades. Rich, dark skin won’t look as radiant with pinks, pastels, and orange though, according to Marsh.

If your undertones are more yellow, look for warmer reds and hot pinks, Johnson says. Browns will look great too. An easy way to tell: Do your veins look green? Then you likely fall in the warm color family.

Regardless of how light or dark your skin is, those with cool undertones can’t go wrong with pinks and blue-based reds according to Johnson. If your veins look blue, you probably fall in a cooler color family.

Influenster picks: NYX Round Case Lipstick in Snow White, Milani Lipstick in Catwalk Pink, L’Oreal Color Riche Lipcolour in British Red

Long-gone are the days when you’ll want to match your lipstick to your outfit, but it’s still important to take into account, according to Marsh. Consider whether the shade your picking out will clash with your clothing or hair color — but don’t be afraid to break the rules! And, when in doubt, pick up a palette. (Marsh likes Bobbi Brown’s lip collection.) You’ll be able to blend and experiment to your hearts content.
