Beauty 101: 5 Beauty Myths Debunked

Did you know that in the 1930’s it was a popular trend in the beauty industry to put products infused with Radium on your skin? Needless to say that as we continue to search for ways to enhance our beauty, we sometimes follow a path that leads us through a myriad of products and techniques that may, or may not bring, the desired results! We were curious if these crazy things that we do to ourselves — like rubbing our skin with coffee to get rid of cellulite — really work. So, we decided to debunk some of those beauty “tips” and myths that really just aren’t true at all!

The Myth: Shaving makes hair grow back faster, darker and more thick than before.

The Truth:

When it comes to shaving your hair you’re essentially just cutting off the end of the hair. By doing this you are not affecting the root of the hair where growth happens! In fact, by shaving you are not affecting the thickness, color or rate of growth!

Try This!

Venus with Olay Shaving Cream

To combat stubble in between shaves, which is what makes hair appear thicker and darker, use a creamy shaving cream! By doing this you’ll add moisture into the hair and reduce the force required to cut through the hair giving you a closer shave. This will help you go longer between shaves and keep your skin nice and smooth.

The Myth: A base tan will protect you from getting sunburn.

The Truth:

Going tanning or laying out before you go on your big trip unfortunately won’t protect you from getting a burn. A base tan only provides an SPF, or sun protection factor, of 3 or less, according to the U.S. surgeon general. That means little to no protection! So grab a bottle of sunscreen before you big trip, regardless of how much sun you’ve seen in recent months!

Try This:

Sally Hansen Airbrush Sun

Instead of exposing your skin to harsh UV rays try a self tanner! This will give you the perfect glow that you want while protecting your beautiful skin. I love Sally Hansen Airbrush Sun because it lasts long and gives a nice, natural glow.

The Myth: Drinking water hydrates your skin.

The Truth:

Drinking water definitely helps your body operate properly, but it has very little effect on the dryness of your skin! According to Katie Rodan, a dermatologist in the San Francisco Bay Area, “humans aren’t like plants. Our skin doesn’t perk up when we consume water.”

Try This:

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

Enter moisturizing creams! Moisturizing cream helps treat dry skin as well as prevent skin from drying out in the future. You can also look for products with hyaluronic acid like Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel.

The Myth: You can shrink your pores.

The Truth:

There is no way to actually shrink the size of your pores! However, Making them appear smaller IS something that you can do. Makeup and skin products can help to give the illusion that your pores are smaller!

Try This:

boscia no pores no shine t-zone treatment

There are tons of makeup and skin products that can make you pore appear smaller! One of my personal favorites is Boscia No Pores No-Shine T-Zone Treatment. It’s a regiment you definitely want to try if you’re looking to make your poresseem smaller.

The Myth: You need to switch up your shampoo because your hair gets used to it!

The Truth:

There has been no scientific evidence that you need to change shampoos! Once you find a product that works for your type of hair it’s okay to keep lathering up with your favorites again and again.

Try This:

Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Purifying Shampoo

Your hair may just be in a bit of a funk from all of the product build up, try to mix in a purifying shampoo like the Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak now and then to get rid of the gunk!
